ABOUT US
April Nelson, Principal Interior Designer
For as long as April can remember, design has been a part of her life. She was exposed to art and architecture at a very young age and was drawn to it immediately.
Her design education began at the Art and Design School at the University of Kansas. After graduation, April worked six years with Spaces, Inc. on a number of challenging commercial projects in the Kansas City area including The Kauffman Foundation, Charles Evans Whittaker Federal Courthouse, Children’s Mercy Hospital, Johnson County Community College, and Cessna Aircraft in Wichita.
April moved on to work for Stoney Broke, LTD. where she continued to design commercial projects and consulted with over 50 families on their residential design needs.
She continues to train with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and has received national certification as an interior designer.
Throughout her work experience and education, April has learned a tremendous amount about collaborating and working with people to improve their environments. She prides herself on her attention to detail and eye for creating an elegant, versatile space. She believes in listening to what her client wants, finding innovative solutions, and in making sure that good, sustainable design is available to everyone.
Annie Burndrett, Interior Designer
Early in life Annie loved decorating and creating. She studied Art History and Business at the University of Kansas and furthered her development as the assistant manager of The Home Gallery.
She learned so much about retail while ordering furniture and accessories, going to market and building displays, but her favorite part was always helping a customer decorate their home. It was so rewarding to get to know people, listen to their goals and collaborate to create the space they dreamed of. Always keeping functionality in mind while make selections to create a space that is well organized, representative of their interests and reflects the things that bring them joy.
In 2008, when Annie graduated, the economy had slowed down and the store closed. She decided to pursue her interest in business and became a financial advisor. Annie built a thriving financial practice for over a decade, but she always missed design and being in a creative environment. She started on her home in Brookside and remodeled it room by room. Then transitioned to helping friends and family with design projects and art consulting to pursue a more creative outlet.
After many successful projects with family and friends, she decided to sell her financial practice and go back to school for design. As a mom with two small kids balancing was not always easy, especially when the pandemic hit, but she finished her Interior Design certificate in 2020. Annie has loved being an interior designer with Studio A and has learned so much from April’s vast experience since coming on board in September 2021.
PROCESS
At Studio a Interior Design, the collaboration and exchange of ideas begin with an in-depth consultation interview, followed by research and planning. With our extensive experience in the interior design industry, we have a wealth of product information and resources at our fingertips to make the right decisions for any project.
Since each project and client is unique, this initial meeting allows our design team and client to determine the project scope. During the research and planning stage, we find the appropriate solutions and present them for approval. Using 3D SketchUp technology and CAD drawings, we can illustrate how a client’s house or office space will look with the recommended layout, new furnishings, and colors. The renderings provide an innovative way for clients to explore new concepts and ideas.
Once a project is approved, Studio a offers project management services. We have a list of pre-approved sub-contractors who implement the design. We order all the materials, schedule deliveries, provide project spreadsheets that include dates and contractors, provide onsite management meetings and follow up with weekly updates. We also handle all the billing and scheduling of sub-contractors.
RATES
We charge an hourly fee of $85.00. For each individual project, a proposal is generated to estimate hours needed and is signed by both designer and client before the project begins. Hours are then billed on a monthly basis against the proposal. Interior products are also purchased through Studio a at a discounted rate or a cost-plus basis.
